MADANABADHA Suite is the latest recording by well known German guitarist and composer Hucky Eichelmann. The four-movement suite was inspired by Thai classical melodies arranged by Anant Narkkong for the play Madanabadha – The Romance of a Rose, written by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1923.
The Suite premiered on 07 December 2024 at a gala concert at Samosorn Sevakamataya Throne Hall, Mrigadayavan Palace, in a version for guitar, narration, and percussion. The performance featured Hucky Eichelmann, National Artist Khru Lek Patravadi Mejudhon and Silpathorn Award recipient Anant Narkkong.
The Movements
1 Nang Nahk
Is a well known melody from the Ayutthaya period (14th to the 18th century) which was used during the reign of King Rama VI to salute the King before any event involving the King, including his own plays and theater performances, somehow similar to an anthem to pay respect to the King.
2 Hor & 3 Rua
“Hor” and “Rua” are ancient Thai sacred compositions. The term “Rua” signifies supernatural power, whereas “Hor” represents movement through the air. These two pieces are traditionally employed to depict the celestial reincarnation of a heavenly being named Madana, who descends from the divine realm to the human world. She is cursed to become a rose, destined to experience the profound emotions of love and disappointment throughout her earthly existence. This narrative unfolds through the thematic composition entitled Madanabadha.
4 Madanabadha Theme
Inspired by a royal verse drama written by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), this theme by Anant Narkkong reinterprets Pattavia, a traditional lakhon rong melody from classical Thai theatre. It tells the tale of Madana, a celestial maiden cursed to become a rose, condemned to endure the sorrow of love inflicted by selfish souls—both in heaven and the human world.
